About Cambridge ESG Intelligence

Research-led. Independent. Built for institutional use.

Overview

Cambridge ESG Intelligence is building a source-traceable sustainability intelligence platform for financial institutions, investors and companies.

ESG ratings are now widely used, but their limitations are increasingly clear: large differences across providers, opaque methodologies, potential conflicts of interest, and the tendency to compress very different sustainability questions into a single score.

We combine rigorous academic research, disciplined methodology, structured ESG and environmental data, and AI-enabled analysis to provide a clearer and more complete understanding of the company — from underlying data to actual performance, risk, disclosure and impact.

From research to practical intelligence

For institutional users, the challenge is no longer simply obtaining more ESG data. It is understanding what is being measured, how conclusions are reached, and what evidence supports them.

Cambridge ESG Intelligence was created to address that gap.

Our work draws on research in asset pricing, investment management, sustainable finance, accounting and disclosure, climate finance, biodiversity, artificial intelligence and machine learning.

That research shapes what we measure, how we assess the significance of sustainability issues for the company, how we evaluate corporate impact, how we deal with uncertainty, and how we distinguish evidence from interpretation.

Our view of the next generation of ESG is not a better headline score. It is a more complete understanding of the company.

What makes us different

Academic rigor

Our methodologies are informed by high-quality research in finance, accounting, sustainability and artificial intelligence.

Our team’s research addresses some of the central challenges in ESG analysis, including rating disagreement, potential conflicts of interest, sustainable investing, carbon risk, biodiversity and corporate disclosure.

This helps us identify where conventional approaches may be too simplistic, where evidence is weak, and where greater analytical care is required.

Independence

Independence matters because ESG assessments can be affected by commercial incentives, methodological choices and relationships with the companies being assessed.

Our principle is straightforward:

Analytical conclusions should be driven by methodology and evidence, not by commercial relationships with the company concerned.

Where advisory work and analytical assessment coexist, potential conflicts should be managed transparently and with clear governance boundaries.

Methodological discipline

We separate sustainability questions that are often combined in conventional ESG ratings.

Our methodology distinguishes between what a company discloses, what it actually delivers, and the ESG risks that may have material implications for its operations, financial performance and long-term value.

Where evidence is incomplete, we make the uncertainty visible rather than force a positive or negative conclusion.

This allows users to understand not only the result, but also how much confidence they should place in it.

Source-level auditability

For institutional users, an analytical conclusion is more useful when it can be checked.

Our platform is designed so that users can move from a result to its explanation, supporting evidence and, where available, the original company disclosure, page, paragraph or table.

Result → Explanation → Evidence → Original Source

This makes the analysis easier to review, challenge and use in formal decision-making.

Deep expertise across China, the UK and the US, with a global perspective

China, the UK and the US are our initial areas of deep specialization.

Our methodology reflects differences in local companies, industries, regulation and reporting practice rather than applying a single generic template across markets.

At the same time, our data and methodology architecture is designed for broader international coverage and meaningful cross-market comparison.

Our aim is to provide analysis that is locally informed, internationally credible and institutionally useful.

Our platform

A connected view of corporate sustainability.

Cambridge ESG Intelligence connects the dimensions that conventional ESG analysis often treats separately: underlying sustainability data, actual performance, ESG risk, disclosure quality, and the company’s impact on the environment and society.

From carbon emissions, energy and water efficiency, pollution and resource use to ESG performance, risk and disclosure, the value lies not in any one score, but in the way these layers connect.

ESG Risk Rating

Assesses sustainability risks that may have material implications for the company’s operations, financial performance and long-term value, taking account of exposure, management, observed outcomes and uncertainty.

ESG Performance

Focuses on what companies actually deliver in practice, based on observable and verifiable outcomes.

Sustainability Disclosure Intelligence & Diagnostics

Examines how complete, specific and decision-useful sustainability reporting is, including the coverage of issues relevant to investors and the company, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Carbon & Environmental Intelligence

Tracks emissions, energy, water, pollution, waste, environmental targets and performance over time, supporting peer, sector and broader market comparison.

Structured Sustainability Data

Transforms company reports and other approved sources into structured, reusable ESG and environmental data.

Evidence & Source Traceback

Connects analytical outputs back to the underlying data, supporting evidence and original source.

Built for institutions

Credit assessment, portfolio monitoring, sustainable finance, sector analysis and corporate client intelligence.

Asset Managers & Institutional Investors

Fundamental research, ESG risk monitoring, stewardship, portfolio analysis and company comparison.

Corporates

Peer benchmarking, disclosure diagnostics, carbon and environmental positioning, investor preparedness and sustainability strategy.

Data & Research Teams

Structured ESG and environmental data for proprietary models, APIs, quantitative research and cross-company analysis.

Research & academic network

Built around high standards of research

Cambridge ESG Intelligence draws on an international research network spanning finance, sustainability, corporate disclosure and artificial intelligence.

The broader network includes researchers with academic links to institutions including the University of Cambridge, New York University Stern School of Business, Lancaster University Management School, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.1

The value of this network is practical: to challenge assumptions, strengthen methodology and continually raise the standard of analytical quality.

Research is not a credential added to the platform. It is part of how the platform is built.

1 Academic affiliations identify individual researchers and do not imply endorsement by their respective universities.

Our vision

From company data to global sustainability intelligence.

Our long-term ambition is to build a globally comparable sustainability intelligence system covering both public and private companies.

We want companies and financial institutions to understand, within a consistent framework:

  • how a company’s carbon and environmental performance compares with peers and sectors;
  • how its ESG performance and risk profile evolve over time;
  • how complete and decision-useful its sustainability disclosure is;
  • how the company affects the environment and society;
  • and what evidence supports each important analytical conclusion.

Our objective is not simply to add another ESG score.

It is to rethink how corporate sustainability is understood — from underlying data to a more complete, connected understanding of the company.

Our priority is not to be first, but to get it right.
